Public Charge Income Worksheet

The consular officer is effectively running this calculation. Run it first, and know your number before you walk in. It compares the offer against the poverty guidelines, then lets you add the resources and costs that change the practical picture.

How it works

  1. 1Enter the wage, the hours, the state and the family size.
  2. 2See the comparison against the poverty guideline for that household.
  3. 3Add what the employer covers and what you will be paying for.
  4. 4Keep it with your case, and revise it when the offer changes.

What you get back

  • Your annual figure against the guideline for your state and household
  • The monthly margin, or the monthly gap
  • How employer health cover, housing and overtime change the picture
  • A number to take to a consultation — never a verdict, which an officer makes

The framework changed on 18 September 2026

DHS rescinded the 2022 public charge regulation (91 FR 45324, 20 July 2026) and USCIS reissued its guidance (Policy Alert PA-2026-09, 18 August 2026). Public charge remains a totality-of-the-circumstances judgement under INA 212(a)(4), and USCIS restates that no single factor can be the sole basis for a finding — except the lack of a sufficient Affidavit of Support, where one is required.

Read the scope carefully, because it is easy to assume this covers you when it does not. That guidance applies to applications for adjustment of status filed on or after 18 September 2026. It does not mention consular processing, the Department of State, or immigrant visa applicants abroad — and this worksheet is written for consular cases. If you are applying from Bangladesh, the Department of State decides your case under its own guidance, which this USCIS policy does not govern.

What this is, and what it is not

Public charge is decided on the whole of your circumstances — age, health, family status, finances, education and skills — by an officer, not by a threshold. This worksheet does the one part of it that is arithmetic: how your offer compares against the poverty guidelines. It returns a number, never a verdict.

Take anything date-sensitive to a licensed immigration attorney. ImmiAxis is not a law firm, and a worksheet is not a substitute for one.

Before you enter this

This asks about your wage, your household size and your savings. In an ImmiAxis account those answers are stored on our systems and held with your case — that is what lets you come back to them. You are giving them to us, not keeping them on your own device, and you should decide to do that knowingly.

  • Used only to prepare and progress your case. Never sold, never used for marketing, never published.
  • Never passed to an employer, to our US recruiting partner, or to anyone else without asking you first.
  • Ask us at any time what we hold about you, and ask us to delete it.
  • Tell us what the question needs and no more. Anything optional can be left blank, and you can raise the difficult parts in person instead.

We protect this with encryption in transit and at rest, access limited to the people working on your case, and audited administrative access. We will not tell you it is impossible to reach — no organisation can honestly promise that, and you should be wary of any that does. What we can promise is that we hold as little as the work requires and delete it when you ask.
